Using the Library

Library service guide for student, faculty, and trainee of St.Luke's International University.
 

Registration

Faculty and staff.
When using library for the first time, please register as a library user at the library counter.
 

Library Hours

Library Hours are subject to change. Please see the library website and the library bulletin board for the latest information.
If you have a valid St.Luke's International University ID card, some of the library services are available while library counter is closed.

Library (University Main Building) will be closed every Monday(if library is closed on, next open day) from 9 to 10 AM for facility maintenance.During maintenance period,no entry is allowed except emergency. Also do not leave personal belongings unattended. If library is closed on Monday, maintenance period will be on next open day at the same time.

 

Closed Periods (Library Counter is Closed)

The library counter is closed on the  following days.
If you have a valid St.Luke's International University ID card, some of the library services are available on closed periods.

Use of Library Collection

1)Browsing, Photocopy
Materials are free to browse and photocopy in the reading rooms.

After use, materials which have not been signed out must not be returned to the shelves, but be placed on the book wagons located on each floor.

To use materials stored in the closed stack of the Library, apply at the library counter supplying information necessary in indentifying the materials (e.g. Title, Book Call Number, Book ID number)Authors of books and journal papers are protected by the Copyright Act. Reproduction of materials must be made in compliance with the Copyright Act (Legislation No.48,1970).
Reproduction permitted in the Library under the Copyright Act is as follows:

  When the person is using the reproduction for hispersonal use in research and only part of the work is copied, one copy perperson (applicable to all individual work published in regular publicationsthat have passed an appropriate period of time after publication) Priority for copying with theLibrary photocopier is given to Library collection.


Photocopycards can be purchased at the Library counter and vending machine in the Old Hospital Building. The University issued ID Cardmust be presented when purchasing the card at the Library.

2)Loan
When materials are to be taken outside the Library, you need to check-out the materials at the library counter or Self-checkout machine.
University issued ID card is required when borrowing materials.
Returned materials cannot be checked out again to the same person at the time of return. Consideration is given so that as many uses as possible have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the materials and put them to good effect.
There are some materials that are not for loan, including valuable items and course texts.
You can see your usage status using the My Library > Usage Status page.

 The loan period is subject to change, for example during intersession period. 

3) Renew
 Renewal can be made once during the loan period, only if the item has not been reserved by another user.
 Audiovidual materials cannot be renewed.
 The renewal period is calculated from the date the item is renewed.
 Renewal can be made using My Library (Library Pocket Guide My Library pdf). Renewal can also be made at the library counter or by
 telephone during library hours.

4) Return
  Loaned items should be returned to the Library Counter befor the end of loan period. At night or when the Library is closed on holidays, the items canbe placed into the book drop slot next to the Library Counter or the return bin in the Old Hospital Building. On the days of full closure of the library, the book return bin in the Old Hospital Building should be used.
 Do not return media materials (DVD, VHS) to book drop slot or book return bin to prevent breakage. Please return personally at the library counter.
 If you cannot return checked out materials due to illness, natural disaster or any other unavoidable reason, please consult the Library.Materials may be returned by postal mail in such cases. Choose services which you can have a recipt in case of accident. The date of return is tha date when the items is received at the Library.

5)Holds
 If the material you want is currently checked out by another user, you can place a hold from Lukaco (Online Public Access Catalog). Status of the requested item is available from My Library's Usage Status page.
  When the requested item is returned, the Library will notify you by e-mail and through My Library's Usage Status page. After notification, the item is set aside at the Library Counter for 1 week (3 days for periodicals).

6) Overdues
 If the loaned item is not returned within the designated period, the Library will send out a overdue notice. Borrowing privilege will be blocked while you have overdue material. 

7) Lost, Damaged Items
 If any item is lost, damaged, or soiled report to the Library immediately. If the item is not found within a specified period, or if the damage or soiling is serious, user is liable for compensation as a rule, by replacing the item. If the item cannot be replaced, user must pay for the sum of money that was required when the item was originally acquired.

 The password must be changed when using My Library for the first time.
 

Reference Service

If you have any question using the Library, please consult the Library Counter. For example, location of the library collection, searching for information, or borrow items that are not in the library collection.
Literature search consultation is also available. This personal advice service is intended to support people searching academic information and to improve information literacy. Literature databases are used and advice is provided on narrowing down the search for useful information. Advice is also offered online. Appointments can be made 24 hours a day through "My Library" on the library homepage. 
The library offers literature search on behalf of faculty and staff of this university to assist with the education, research, and administrative work they perform. We select keywords for the requested research, decide on the formulas and databases to use, and provide the results of database searches (Only bibliographic information).
 

Guidance

Lectures, exercises and various other opportunities are provided to students so that they can make full use of the wealth of information sources accessible through the Library and to pursue their learning activities effectively, and to acquire skills for using research information in clinical practice as a professional.
 

Purchase Recommendation

 Using the My Library's Purchase Request page, input the necesary details (i.e. title, author, publisher, year of publication) and insert comment as to why the publication should be in the library. LIbrary director shall decide whether or not to purchase the item and notify the applicant via e-mail and My Library.
 Journals are purchased as annual subscriptions and therefore, application should be made for the ensuing year by the end of August.
 

Inter-library cooperation service

 This service is for student and faculty
Through inter-library arrangement, materials not available in the Library can be ordered as loan or photocopies from other libraries where the materials are located. Using the My Library's Copy & Loan Order menu, user should input details necessary for document order (i.e. title, author, name of journal, volume, page, year of publication). User shall be responsible for payin the cost necessary for ordering the reference document.
 

Visiting other libraries

This service is for student and faculty
 If user wish to use a library of another university / institution, consult the Library Counter first. The library will contact the library concerned and issue a letter of introduction as required.

Use of Facility and Equipment

1) Study Room
 The study room is for the purpose of group study using reference materials in the Library. To use the Study room, reservation must be made using the web-nadeshiko. As arule room use is in 2-hour blocks. The Study room must not be locked.

2) Search Room
 Search room in the Old Hospital Building is for staff only.

3)Reserved Seating
 Seat reservation is possible for desk with PC installed with software for video editing, etc. To use these seats, reservation must be made using the web-nadeshiko. As a rule, seat use is in 2-hour blocks.

4) Laptops
 Laptops that can be used inside the library and learning commons, except for the Old Hospital Building can be issued on loan, limited to one device per person at the same time. Loans are made through the library counter.  As a rule, laptop use is in 2-hour blocks. Laptops whether loaned or personal, should not be used in the Quit Area.

5) iPad  (For student and faculty)
 Tablets that can be used in the Main University Building, CCA, and Building No.2 can be issued on loan. limited to one device per person at the same time. Loans are made through the library counter. The tablet must be returned the same day, within the library hours.
